If the modern farmhouse craze just isn’t quite country enough for you, you might be interested in a bona fide bardominium. This type of home often comes on a decent-sized plot of land and has plenty of interior space—all without making you sacrifice modern conveniences like up-to-date kitchens and baths.

In case you’re new to the barndominium trend (the word is a mashup of “barn” and “condominium”), this type of structure is a spacious building such as a barn that is retrofitted as a home. It could also be an open-concept steel building constructed from the ground up to look like a barn.

A big upside of barndominiums is that they are often modestly priced. We easily found five of these great homes priced below $400,000. Some of them are dual-purpose, providing ideal work-from-home spaces.

And you don’t have to be a committed farmer to appreciate them. One of them is located right downtown, and another offers an easy commute to a Tesla Gigafactory. Intrigued? Take a look:

Price: $399,900 Terrific twofer: Located in the Central Business District, this barndominium features both residential and commercial space. It’s within walking distance of Old Town Wichita, with all of its restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues.

On one side of the building, you’ll find a 1360-square-foot residence with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and two offices. The open floor plan includes a great room with a vaulted ceiling and a kitchen with an island, cabinetry, quartz countertops, and a pantry.

In the center of the building is a huge, drive-through, four-car garage with overhead doors on each end. It offers space to add a second-story apartment.

The commercial space also includes a large office with a half-bath and a separate entrance.

Is this the ideal live-work space or what?
