If you’re in the market for a backyard getaway or are looking for a possible solution to the housing market shortage, modern prefabricated tiny houses may be your answer.

Depending on the unit's size, features, and assembly requirements, Home Depot’s prefabricated tiny houses range from about $4,000 to $40,000. A curious user online posed the question in a tweet with an image of Home Depot’s $44,000 one bed, one bath 540 square-feet prefabricated house: “Thoughts?”

Although the product description states that it is "architecturally designed to provide extra-space outside of your home for personal use," one user reacting to the tweet said that “getting off the grid” may be easier than ever.

But there’s always a catch.

Although the example image of the product shows a finished home, the kit only includes a steel frame – made with “high-quality,” termite-proof steel that is low-maintenance and “won’t bend, twist, warp, or mold” – as well as the necessary components to assemble the product.

Additionally, steel frame buildings are not affected by rodents or bugs, are fire resistant and recyclable, the company, PLUS 1 Homes, claims.

“You have complete freedom to design and finish your ADU in a completely unique way: to match your spatial needs, budget, and personal style,” the company said. “The Home Depot offers most finishings you'll need to complete your personal space such as doors, windows, electrical, plumbing and finishes,” the product description states.

The frame includes punched holes for “easier installation of electrical and plumbing” and space for two mini kitchens – one along the wall opposite the sofa and another upstairs deck area.

All available models can be modified for requirements in seismic, hurricane, tornado, heavy snow load, or other circumstances to “meet the challenges of Mother Nature” and protect your investment.

Frame kits can range from 96 square feet up to 3,000 square feet, and larger if needed, and all models come with upgrade options.

The company does not pre-build the home but can connect buyers with their local construction partners to help with the project.

If you decide to make the leap, be sure to check local zoning guidelines and restrictions to ensure proper approval for a project, the company says.
